The Commando Joe’s team recently attended the Armed Forces Covenant’s award ceremony. It was an honour to attend the event and celebrate all of the businesses that support the Armed Forces community.

Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenants from across Yorkshire, the North West and East Midlands came together to pay tribute to forces-friendly organisations who have won Gold Awards under the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme. Commando Joe’s are honoured to have won such a prestigious award and will continue to support the Armed Forces Community by employing and supporting veterans.

Mike Hamilton OBE, Founder of Commando Joe’s said “Being a Gold Award holder means so much to me and our whole company, it is such a huge achievement. We’re quite a small company but we predominantly employ Veterans who work in primary and secondary schools. It’s made us reflect on our organisation and make sure that we’re doing the most that we can for our employees.

Commando Joe’s currently supports over 1,000 schools across the UK and the whole ethos is around character education. We work on resilience, empathy, self-awareness, positivity, excellence, communication and teamwork. Our Veterans go into schools and do breakfast clubs, lunchtime clubs, work with target intervention groups and deliver our RESPECT programme. They work with the whole school and take them on an experiential learning journey so that they can learn what it means to be resilient but in a really fun and safe environment.”

There are lots of different ways to be a forces-friendly employer. For many, the first step is to sign up to the Armed Forces Covenant which is a pledge to treat the military fairly. Others choose to apply for an award under the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme. Why not take a look and see if you can support the Armed Forces Community.
